Your Winter Home Checklist

Monster snow and ice storms usually happen once or twice a year in northern Virginia.  Since we are located near Washington, DC in the mid Atlantic there are many folks new to the areas weather as almost north and not quite south.

You really do not want to be on our roads looking for the solution to a winter emergency during a storm.  If you are new to winters try testing your breaks and turning in an empty parking lot on the first snow/ice storm.  Learning how long it takes to stop and how much to turn without a slide is invaluable if caught out in a sudden storm.

• Attic-Insulate open areas
• Ceiling Fans-Reverse them

• Food Closet-Stock it
• Gutters-Clean them
• Gutters-Divert water with drainage extension
• Heating System-Check up
• Hose-Turn Off in the house

• Outdoor Furniture-Batten down
• Roof Ice-Prevent ice dams
• Roof-Visual and Attic check
• Sump Pump-Test it
• Tires-Check for low tread
• Trees-Late winter pruning
• Windows and Doors-Caulk and Weather stripping

Its’ that time again to think of all those problems with the house that you have been putting off.  It is also time to surveys things to find out if there is any new problem that you can find which will keep the home safe and the family warm though the winter.
